What to Know Before Purchasing an RC Plane

Prior to purchasing an RC plane, there are some basic factors to consider that help determine what type to buy. There are kits, ARF (Almost Ready to Fly) and RTF (Ready To Fly) models available. RC planes can have an electric power source or a gas powered motor. It is important to know about the availability of spare parts. Check out all of these things to decide which is the best choice.

Kits, ARFs and RTFs

Buying an RC plane kit means building the plane from a set of plans and a box of parts. It is not advisable for a beginner to attempt this for an RC plane. The kit does not contain the motor, battery pack, ESC (electronic speed control) and radio gear. An ARF (Almost Ready to Fly) comes about 90 percent complete but the motor, ESC, battery pack and radio gear are not included. An RFT (Ready To Fly) is completely finished and has the radio and motor installed.

Gas motors versus electric motors

Gas powered RC planes have somewhat restricted usage. These are typically the types flown in RC clubs with designated flying fields. These motors require specific field equipment and maintenance. Electric RC planes are a cleaner, quieter and less expensive alternative to gas-powered planes. There are more areas suited to flying the electric versions than there are for gas powered ones.

Determine availability of spare parts

Prior to purchasing any RC plane, check out the availability of spare parts. Crashes occur eventually, and spare parts that are difficult to find are a huge hindrance to making repairs. It is typically easier and cheaper to find replacement parts for RTF planes constructed of foam than the balsa wood types of planes.

Flying RC planes is a fun hobby. Prior to obtaining an RC plane, there are a few items to consider. The amount of effort required to build the plane is an important consideration. The type of motor can affect where it is acceptable to fly the plane. Knowing that spare parts are available for the inevitable crash and subsequent repairs is critical in making a choice. Investigate all these things prior to making the purchase.
